About Rainy Lake Conservancy

Good decisions on conservation and land protection are based on good science. In 2002, the Rainy Lake Conservancy, in partnership with the Nature Conservancy of Canada and the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, sponsored the first biodiversity inventory on the Canadian side of Rainy Lake. Every summer members participate in a growing number of water monitoring projects. In addition, the Conservancy is supporting fish research in the watershed, believing that a healthy fishery is an indicator of a healthy lake.

At local events throughout the year, the Rainy Lake Conservancy is a strong advocate of good shoreline stewardship.

Members distribute conservation literature on shoreline management, on responsible fishing practices, on invasive species identification and control, and on land protection options.

Land can be protected through a variety of ways: conservation easements, donations of land to conservation organizations, and good stewardship. In 2014, the RLC partnered with the American Friends of Canadian Land Trusts to complete four Conservation Easements on Rainy Lake. As a result, over 146 hectares (360 acres) of privately-owned land were protected in perpetuity.  Currently, (448 acres) 181 HA of private land are protected through this partnership.
