Community involvement is a major thrust of the Rainy Lake Conservancy. The Conservancy participates in and supports local activities.
RLC members have shared their passion for preserving Rainy Lake at Museums and farmers' markets, conferences and workshops, IJC meetings and at our General Meetings. We distribute lakeshore stewardship information through the Fort Frances Chamber of Commerce and the Fort Frances Museum.
Our combined efforts to preserve the clean waters, beautiful scenic shorelines, good fishing and peaceful ambience of Rainy Lake will continue to attract tourists and other visitors in the future, thus making a contribution to the local economies as well as to contributing to the health of the planet.
The Rainy Lake Conservancy is a member of the Fort Frances Chamber of Commerce. RLC distributes conservation information through the Chambers' Tourist Information Centre and other services offered to members.
Supported by an Ontario Trillium Grant, RLC partnered with the Rainy River Valley Field Naturalists (RRVFN) and the Nature Conservancy of Canada to build the Cranberry Peatlands Interpretive Bog Walk Trail, located in Alberton Twp. RLC volunteers have helped to maintain the trail, and design and print pamphlets about the flora and fauna of the bog.
Rainy River District Stewardship Tree Project
RLC participated in planning sessions and lent financial support to this worth-while project. Local people learned more about local trees and high school students were educated in the use of technology to identify and label trees.
Rainy Lake Conservancy supports the RLFCT, which was established in 2005. The trust is committed to sound scientific research aimed at enhancing the long term health of the Rainy Lake fishery, a goal shared by RLC. A member of the Conservancy presently serves on the board of directors.
A member of the RLC serves on this important advisory group for our watershed.
